About Us

YiZakubona Crafts manufactures and retails Xhosa Traditional Clothing in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Emphasis is placed on manufacturing garments made in the style of the Xhosa traditional wear using the authentic fabrics and braiding techniques used for and on the garments. However this is done in such a way as to enhance the elegance and universal appeal of the garments in the modern day context.

There has in recent years been an influx of “rest of Africa” clothing into South Africa but little had been done to promote and further the existing clothing of this area. Xhosa dress is stylish and striking and extremely flattering to any figure. All the pieces can be worn individually to compliment most Western style outfits thereby adding to their universal attraction.

This range of clothing includes ladies traditional as well as men’s and kiddies outfits.
We offer a range of Caftans and men’s shirts reflecting a broader African theme. These garments are both versatile in their application and extremely comfortable to wear.

The company has also developed its own unique Xhosa Corporate Gift Range. All Items are made using the traditional fabrics of the area and are decorated with the characteristic braiding and bead work.

The Area

Port Alfred is a small seaside village in the Eastern Cape and characteristic of this area gainful employment and skills training are in short supply. The goal of the company is twofold. By promoting the clothing of this area, through manufacturing and sales both nationally and internationally, employment opportunities are created alongside the development of skills. In addition those preexisting semiskilled operations in the informal sector are brought into focus with the company subcontracting them when required.

Owners Profile

Pen Schultz whose family ancestry comprises both British (Scottish, Irish, English!) and German settlers in the Eastern Cape started manufacturing shortly after returning to the area permanently. Over the years she had developed a fascination and passion for the clothing worn by the Xhosa people in the area, and has made it her mission to create Xhosa garments that can be worn by all people in all places.

Pen is often asked to demonstrate the application of the clothing and to explain the development and history of both the clothing and the fabrics they are made from and why they are worn like they are. This is then translated into a modern day context. The elegance of the clothing from this area has a universal appeal. These talks give the visitor (not to mention local and national residents) a unique glimpse into the diversity of the people in the Eastern Cape We have found that these talks are greatly appreciated and that they generate an attraction for both the area, its cultural wealth, and the beauty of its craft and surroundings.
